Ball Insert Endmills

I was wondering is any of you guys are using Ball Insert Endmills. Currently I am using all solid Carbide 4 Flute Ball Endmills, and I was thinking about changing to insertable tooling. Just wondering what your guys thoughts about the insert ball endmills were?

Get in touch with the local Mitsubishi rep. They offer a 2 year warranty on their cutters and they seem to have some of the best coatings that lasts a long time. The coating is VP15TF. This would be for a indexable cutter with insert/s. If the cutter gets dull, change an insert and its back in business. What material are you cutting and on what hind of machine?

For tools 1/2" dia. and over, we use Sandvik's CoroMill ballnose with inserts and they work great.

What size emdmill are you using? We are using a 1/2 ball indexable on 17-ph SS. It is made by Ingersoll. We tried a Mitsubishi, it was junk. It didn't have any kind of chipbreak or releif. The ingersoll is just like the Iscar but lots cheaper(inserts). It holds up just as good as the iscar and better than the Mitsubishi.

I will be using from 1/2 up to 3/4 presently. I am cutting SAE 1141 material on a HAAS VF-4 on a Rotary Axis.

For tools over 1/2", we use Dapra High-Performance ball nose inserts. They have worked very well for us.

Dapra is the way to go. Buy 30 inserts & the body is free. It is the ONLY inserted ball that I have found that will cut with the very tip

Walters. They are way better that Iscar and you can get them with carbide shanks, which cuts out a lot of deflection.

we are currently using dijet mirror ball radius cutters for finishing and swing ball end mills to rough. we cut alot of tool steel and they stand up really well. you can find them online at

www.dijetusa.com the supplier we use always has promos so if we buy 20 inserts we get the holder for free. the insets are less expensive than sandvicks check it out.
