Filter Settings For Mold GURUS

I do a lot of prototype parts out of aluminum before they become castings. I am looking for the best filter settings to get the best-looking surface finishes on complex 3-d surface toolpaths.

 

I figured the guys making molds or similar parts would have some suggestions.

 

Question: What do you guys suggest for filter settings on surface and HST toolpaths to get the best finishes?

 

Any other tips or tricks?

Thanks, I've seen the post before.

 

However, my wonderful IT department has the pic's blocked so I cannot see what I'm guessing is a screen shot of your settings.

 

If you could type them in, I would greatly appreciate it!

r&d set the slider bars right in the middle (normal , better, normal)you get a good finish and not all the crunch time im sure peon would back me up on that

I will try that as soon as I install X4.

I am currently still using X3MU1.

Can you please tell me what the actual numbers are?

depending on the tolerance of the part/toolpath filter accordingly roughing open up the tolerance (.002) finishing tighten it up (.0005-.0002)

make the time to install X4 the tool path refinement works great and it generates much faster

Roughing leaving .025"

Total tolerance = .002"-.003"

Turn on Line/Arc Filter Settings

Turn on Smoothing

Turn on One Way Filtering

Turn OFF create arcs in xy, xz and yz (Had way too many issues with gouging with these turned on.

Set Cut Tolerance to .001" - .0015"

Slide the center/horizontal slider to the middle.

 

 

Finishing

Total tolerance = .0004"

Cut tolerance = .0002"

And all the other settings mentioned above remain the same.

Use the horizontal sliders rather than the vertical sliders. Sometimes the vertical sliders don't stick.
